Shelf life and food waste: why packaging that protects better pollutes less

The debate on sustainable food packaging is almost entirely focused on end-of-life: recyclable, compostable, monomaterial. Legitimate questions, but only part of the picture. The most recent life cycle assessments point to a less publicised and rather inconvenient fact for anyone selling sustainability by slogan: in the overall environmental balance of a food product, food waste weighs far more than the packaging that protects it. A film that extends shelf life by a few days can reduce the footprint of the product+packaging system more than any optimisation on the packaging material itself.

How heavy is food waste in Europe

According to Eurostat data released in October 2025, in 2023 the European Union generated 58.2 million tonnes of food waste, equivalent to about 130 kg per inhabitant. Households account for 53% of the total; the remaining 47% is generated along the supply chain: 19% in food and beverage manufacturing, 11% in restaurants and food services, 10% in primary production, 8% in retail and distribution. The estimated economic cost exceeds 130 billion euros per year (source: Eurostat, 2025).

In September 2025 the European Parliament approved binding food waste reduction targets for 2030, integrated into the revised Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2025/1892). For the first time these targets are no longer voluntary. Anyone producing, distributing or selling food will have to measure and reduce waste across the value chain. Packaging enters this discussion as one of the most immediate operational levers.

Why food weighs more than its packaging in LCA

Many older LCA studies analysed packaging in isolation, as if the product it contained did not exist. A framing that produced a persistent distortion: endless discussion of plastic grams and recyclability while ignoring the heavier factor. Recent scientific reviews have shifted the perspective.

An analysis published in January 2026 in the journal Sustainability reports that packaging accounts for between 0.4% and 18% of the carbon footprint of the food+packaging system, with the lowest values precisely in high-impact categories such as meat, fish and dairy (source: Grönman & Silvenius, 2026). In plain terms: for a packaged steak, cutting food waste by a few percentage points offsets the entire environmental impact of the packaging that contains it.

What changes when shelf life is extended by a few days

Experimental data on real products are even sharper. A 2024 study published in Sustainable Production and Consumption measured the effect of extending chicken breast shelf life from 6 to 15 days using modified atmosphere packaging: downstream food waste dropped from 47% to 15% of total slaughterhouse output, delivering a reduction in climate change impact of about 78% (source: Kouhizadeh et al., 2024).

On beef, another recent study found that moving from 6 to 16 days of shelf life cuts waste by 9 percentage points, saving approximately 730 g of CO2 equivalent per functional unit. These are not margins of error. They are orders of magnitude. No optimisation on packaging materials alone produces comparable effects on highly perishable fresh products.

The monomaterial paradox on highly perishable products

A peer-reviewed study published in January 2026 compared a monomaterial packaging (21 days shelf life) with a high-barrier multilayer packaging (35 days shelf life) for a sliced cured meat. The result is counterintuitive: the monomaterial, often presented as the more coherent environmental choice because more easily recyclable, showed the highest environmental impact in five out of seven categories analysed, including global warming (source: Vignali et al., 2026, PubMed). The reason is the same one: shorter shelf life generated more waste downstream, and that waste outweighed the theoretical gain in recyclability.

This does not mean monomaterial is always the wrong choice. It means it must be assessed against the product it contains. For dry pasta, with a shelf life measured in months, the calculation runs differently. For sliced cured meat or fresh beef, it flips.

The right questions for a brand owner

The operational question for anyone putting a food product on shelf is therefore twofold. On one side, regulatory compliance requires recyclable materials and documented claims (PPWR – Reg. 2025/40, Green Claims Directive 2024/825, DIN EN 13430). On the other, film selection has to account for the waste that film helps avoid, not just its end-of-life destination.

Useful questions when evaluating a supplier:

  • What is the real shelf life the film delivers on my specific product, and which third-party tests document it?
  • Are there LCA studies that include food waste, not just the packaging footprint in isolation?
  • Is the film's recyclability verified under DIN EN 13430 by an independent laboratory (for example Fraunhofer IVV)?
  • Is the film compatible with existing recycling streams in the destination country, or does it require infrastructure that has yet to be built?

None of these points is settled by a logo or a slogan. They are settled by measured, third-party, verifiable data.

DECOMAB: extended shelf life with documented recyclability

DECOMAB is a non-crosslinked barrier shrink film, designed to extend the shelf life of fresh meat, cheese and other highly perishable products. The barrier is achieved through blown film co-extrusion without crosslinking by ionising radiation, a process that in competing systems compromises the film's compatibility with mechanical recycling streams.
